The 2019 Office for National Statistics (ONS) mid-year estimate of population for County Durham was 530,094, a net increase of 3,114  people equivalent to a 0.6% increase since 2018, (England & Wales 0.5% increase) and had the fourth largest population increase out of the twelve north east authorities since 2001.

Between 2001 and 2019 the population of County Durham increased by 36,400 people (7.4%) with the North East increasing by 5.1% over the same period.  These latest estimates show that the county’s population has grown in number for each of the last 15 consecutive years and County Durham is now the seventh largest all-purpose authority, after Bradford which has remained in sixth position in this release, with Manchester in fifth position.

ONS predict (2018 projections) that the county’s population will continue to grow over the coming years, increasing by 3.7% by 2028 and by 6.6% overall by 2043.
