The 2017 Office for National Statistics (ONS) mid-year estimate of population for County Durham was 523,662, a net increase of 1,519 people equivalent to a 0.3% increase since 2016, (England & Wales 0.6% increase) and had the fifth largest population increase out of the twelve north east authorities since 2001.

Between 2001 and 2017 the population of County Durham increased by 30,000 people (6.1%) with the North East increasing by 4.1% over the same period.  These latest estimates show that the county’s population has grown in number for each of the last 14 consecutive years and County Durham is now the seventh largest all-purpose authority, after Bradford which has remained in sixth position in this release, with Manchester in fifth position.

ONS predict (2016 projections) that the county’s population will continue to grow over the coming years, increasing by 3.0% by 2026 and by 5.6% overall by 2041.
