Population

The following data report is based upon the latest Office for National Statistics (ONS) mid-year population estimates.

Please note that data for the 2021 Census is now available ( 2021 Census ) which estimated the population of County Durham to be 522,100.

The 2020 Office for National Statistics (ONS) mid-year estimate of population for County Durham was 533,149, a net increase of 3,055  people equivalent to a 0.6% increase since 2019, (England & Wales 0.5% increase) and had the fourth largest population increase out of the twelve north east authorities since 2001.

Between 2001 and 2020 the population of County Durham increased by 39,500 people (8%) with the North East increasing by 5.5% over the same period.  These latest estimates show that the county’s population has grown in number for each of the last 15 consecutive years.

ONS predict (2018 projections) that the county’s population will continue to grow over the coming years, increasing by 3.7% by 2028 and by 6.6% overall by 2043.
