Education is one of the most important wider determinants of health. The Marmot Review 2010 highlighted the influence of families on educational attainment and emphasised the need for strong links between schools, families and other services to ensure that children achieve the best start in life.

Key messages
- At the end of reception class in 2016, 69.0% of pupils in County Durham achieved a Good Level of Development. Across the North East, the percentage was 68.4%. County Durham and the North East were slightly below the England average, which was 69.3%.
- For Key Stage 2 (children aged 7-11yrs) 59% of County Durham pupils achieved the expected standard in Reading, Writing and Maths in 2016, compared to 53% nationally and 57% in the North East.
- In 2016, at Key Stage 4, 62.3% of pupils achieved A*-C in both English and Mathematics GCSEs compared to 63.3% nationally in the state-funded sector and 61.6% in the North East.
- In 2016, the average Attainment 8 Score for County Durham was 49.2. The national average based on all state-funded schools was 49.9 and the North East average was 48.7.
- The proportion of 16 and 17 years old who are Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEET) is 5.1%. The national average is 2.6% and the regional average is 4.1%. (December 2017)
